What is a cell phone? I am sure most all of us have been exposed to a cell phone by now. In fact, it is safe to bet that most of us own one or more cell phones already. After all, there are around 1.7 billion cell phone subscribers around the globe today. So getting back to the question; a cell phone is basically a telephone that connects to a telephone network wirelessly using radio transmission technology. As Wikipedia points out, the cell phone communicates via a network of base stations which are in turn linked to the conventional telephone network.

There are several different features to consider when buying a cell phone. You will want to consider weight, size, color, battery life, dual-mode capability (analog and digital), camera capability, video capability, color of display, walkie talkie capability, etc. There are also several different types of cell phones. There are flip phones, single-piece phones, PDA phones, Blackberry phones, and others. You have plenty of features to choose from, so your cell phone selection may take a little time.

Cell phones are manufactured by many companies around the world. You can find cell phones made by Nokia, Sanyo, Samsung, LG, palmOne, and BlackBerry. All of these manufacturers make a nice cell phone, so it really comes down to which features you are looking for that determines which cell phone you purchase.

Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, Cingular, US Cellular, Cellular One and many other companies offer cell phone service in the United States. Cell phone service plans typically have a certain number of anytime minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited long distance, call waiting, caller ID, and several other features. These additional features may include text messaging capability, internet browsing, walkie-talkie capability, paging and conference calling.

Ringtones are currently a feature of cell phones that very popular. People customize the ring on their cell phone with a song, tune, melody, etc. Ringtones can be free or they may cost up to $5 each. There are several websites where you can find ringtones for your phone. I will post a more informative article in the near future regarding ringtones. In the meantime you can find more information by typing "ringtone" into Google and running a search.

For more information on cell phones and the companies that provide cell phone service simply run a search for "cell phone" on Google and you will get plenty of addtional information.
