Your Guide to Mobile Ring Tones
« Posted: October 07, 2007, 01:30:33 PM »

Specialized ring tones are becoming popular - people are even giving them away as gifts. Mobile phones have become a status symbol now - apart from being a communication device. The most attractive feature in a mobile phone is the ring tone - the tone that you hear when you receive a call from an outsider. Sometimes ring tones are even indicative of the personality of the person using the mobile phone.

Musical ring tones have become popular and apart from the inbuilt tones in your mobile phone there is a wide range of ring tones to choose from. These include music/tones from movies, TV shows, pop albums and music from popular artists.

Basically there are five types of ring tones. The popular one being the monophonic tones where a series of computer generated notes are played one at a time. In contrast polyphonic ring tones allow for multiple notes. This apart, we also have ring tones classified as Super Tones. This category includes Musical Tones that are actual snippets of musical hits, Voice Tones that enables you to hear voices of celebrities and comedians and finally Sound Effect ring tones. Other ring tones like real or true ring tones and MP3 ring tones are also popular.

Not all ring tones are created equally nor will they work for all wireless phones. So before you begin shopping for ring tones you definitely must check it's compatibility with your mobile phone model. You can also check the mobile service provider's website to find out what types of tones you can download to your phone.

Ring tones can be downloaded on to your mobile phone quite easily. The mobile companies themselves offer these ring tones that can be downloaded directly from their web site to your mobile phone. You can also purchase them through an SMS service offered by these companies. This apart there are many websites like FreedomRingTones.com that allows free downloads of the ring tone of your choice. You will have to pay a fee to the service provider to acquire these ring tones. Monophonic tones usually cost about 99 cents each, polyphonics cost about $1.99 and Super Tones could be priced around $2.50.

Once you select a tone, you need to install it on your phone. At some sites, you send a text message from your phone to the site. The message includes the number assigned to the specific ring tone you want to buy. Your purchase is confirmed by a return message and the ring tone is sent to your phone. The charge appears on your mobile phone bill. Some sites require your phone number and they will send the tone to your phone's inbox and your account will be billed for it.

Some web sites also offer free ring tone conversion software. This helps you add new ring tones to your mobile phone without the need for cables or expensive premium rate SMS services. Moreover, such software supports most of the models and makes of cell phones available in the market today.
