Types of Phone Bugs
 by: Shawn Davis

Everyone loves learning about phone bugs. This is because they are among the most popular covert eavesdropping devices. These listening devices can allow someone to relatively easily listen in on phone conversations anywhere from a few feet away to miles away. There are five many types of phone bugs that can be used to listen in on what is happening on the line, or even in the rest of the house.

1. The acoustic bug is the most basic and low-tech of all bugs. These types of phone bugs cannot properly be called as such, as they make use of things like stethoscopes and rubber tubes to intercept communication with the ear. This means that you will only be able to use “soft spots” in construction, such as power outlets, around windows, and ventilation sources.

2. An ultrasonic bug is one of the phone bugs that make use of audio pressure waves. An audio signal is captured and then turned into a sound above human hearing. It is then intercepted and reconverted to audio where it can be heard in safety.

3. The most popular of the phone bugs is the radio frequency (RF) bug. This bug makes use f a radio transmitter. It is placed in an area or even inside some type of device. These bugs are inexpensive and easy to dispose of. Additionally, it is very difficult to trace the person who planted the device.

4. The least popular of all devices that can be used as phone bugs is called the optical bug. This device turns sound, or even data, into a beam of light that appears as a pulse. These devices are quite expensive, and one will not hear what is being said until the light beam is reconverted into sound

5. Finally, it is possible to combine any of these phone bugs into one eavesdropping device. This is called a hybrid bug and makes use of more than one method to relay the sounds that are happening in a home.

It is important to note that most of these phone bugs, unless clipped into the line itself (which is possible with a transmitter bug), will only allow you to hear one end of the conversation. But sometimes all you need to hear is the one end with the help of one of the kinds of phone bugs.
