Are you among the people fond of purchasing in discounted retail, then the Wal-Mart is your place. It was in 1962 when Wal-Mart opened its first store in Rogers, Arkansas by Sam Walton. Wal-Mart was incorporated into Wal-Mart Stores, Inc by 1969 and was public on the New York Stock Exchange as WMT in 1972. In 1990 it was the nation's largest retailer in United States and moved into Mexico and Canada in 1991 and 1994. Wal-Mart was incorporated into the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 1997.
Wal-Mart is a chain of large-scale discount retail and grocery superstores in a warehouse style to suit everyone's needs and desires. It also comes under the symbol WMT in New York Stock Exchange. Sam's Club is also owned by Wal-Mart Corporation. Wal-Mart has become the largest retailer and the second largest corporation in the world. It is the largest non-government employer in North America and has more revenue generation than many countries close to 300 billion dollars a year. It is known for its discount retail and grocery markets allover the country. Wal-Mart has successfully running stores in the United Kingdom and Puerto Rico.
Public attention is always on the large and successful corporations like Wal-Mart. Such public attention sometimes results in opposition and false allegations on Wal-Mart as it has to compete with small family owned stores along with beg corporations. In some areas there were public protests when it was declared that Wal-Mart would open a new store. The main reason for such opposition, allegations and public protests are that it uses overseas labor, poor environmental policies, and low wages for employees and there is no room for unions.
To overcome these problems, in the year 2005, Wal-Mart had launched several efforts for public relations that include commercials and advertisements taking care of employees of Wal-Mart Corporation, donations in charitable organizations etc. Recently, Wal-Mart Corporation donated seventeen million dollars for Hurricane Katrina relief effort to help the humanity in overcoming the natural disaster.
But it would take time and lot of efforts to make people to believe them. Still, the sales record of Wal-Mart Corporation is breaking the records that show the trust of people in its products and services.
