Procrastination is the art of putting off until tomorrow what you should be doing today. Procrastination is probably the most expensive habit that a person can develop because it costs you all the success that you could be enjoying if you were an action taker.
How do you know if procrastination is having a detrimental effect on your life? Here are a few clues to look for.
- If you are having similar problems to what you had last year then you are probably a procrastinator in that area of your life.
- If it has been ten years since you left school and you still need to go to work then you are probably a procrastinator in your wealth creation efforts.
- Look around you. If your home or work environment is untidy then you are definitely a procrastinator.
Procrastination is a thief and you simply can't afford to allow it to exist in your life. So here are a couple of tips to help you rid yourself of this evil for good.
One powerful strategy is to change your attitude towards procrastination.
Most procrastinators are sincere. When they tell themselves that they will do it later they actually believe it. However the evidence contradicts this belief. If you don't want to do it now then you are far less likely to want to do it down the track when it has become a bigger and uglier task.
Try this little trick. Whenever you are tempted to procrastinate something, say to yourself "either I do it now or I accept that I am never going to do it." If you approach this seriously you will be surprised at just how effective it is. No-one wants to reap the consequences of never doing an important task. So this little trick helps you take action on what is important and, as a result, your life will start to change for the better.
Most procrastinators are living in the results of their inaction. For example they may be in an untidy, messy environment. They continue to procrastinate the cleaning process, because the bigger it gets the scarier it gets. Finally the consequences of living in this mess may become scarier than the thoughts of cleaning up and so they have a massive spring clean. Then they start the whole cycle again.
The only way to break this cycle is to develop an enjoyment from keeping your environment neat and tidy. There is a strategy to accomplish this. Go to the mess now and look for the simplest, easiest thing to do and then do it. It doesn't matter how small or insignificant this thing is. In fact the smaller the better. When you have done it stop for a moment and think how good that felt. Then look for the next simplest, smallest thing and do that.
The reason why procrastinators procrastinate is that the size of the job overwhelms them. If they develop the habit of breaking that job into small pieces that are each non-threatening then they will find it easy to do each piece one at a time.
Initially you have to be consciously aware of this process and consciously make an effort to break every potential task into small, non threatening action steps. But if you keep this up, after a while it starts to happen automatically and subconsciously and you have broken the procrastination habit for life.
