-Scalable, network-based platform enables migration from broadcast to video personalisation for broadband service providers-

10 September 2008 - BigBand Networks, Inc. is extending its leadership in digital video networking with the introduction of a new network-based media processing platform to help broadband service providers seamlessly transition from a broadcast video distribution model to personalised video delivery. BigBand’s new platform is designed to cost-effectively deliver personalised video services, including IPTV, addressable advertising, higher-quality multi-channel HD and value-added interactive services.

The BigBand Media Services Platform, MSP2000, gives broadband service providers an evolutionary path to delivering personalised video services and harnesses existing infrastructure to open new revenue opportunities per subscriber, including via more relevant advertising. The platform leverages BigBand’s proven rich media processing experience using an innovative networking architecture and carrier-grade design to enhance the quality of video services across cable, DSL, fiber and wireless access networks. BigBand’s MSP2000 is currently in trials with service providers worldwide, with commercial rollouts expected in 2009.

According to the analyst firm In-Stat, the global market for digital video networking equipment will top $2 billion by 2012. “Consumers are expecting a personalised on-demand TV viewing experience, with more high definition TV content, and relevant advertising, which means huge demands for bandwidth,” said Gerry Kaufhold, principal analyst at In-Stat. “Service providers need a highly-reliable network-based approach that enables them to deploy new services quickly, and dynamically allocate resources to deliver a high quality user experience over their existing plant. BigBand’s MSP2000 addresses these needs.”

The BigBand MSP2000 can be simply added to any broadband access network, combining IP networking capabilities with rich media processing power. The network-based platform is deployable across the headend and the hub, offering service providers increased flexibility and control. It gives service providers the ability to launch personal media applications with greater scale, affordability and higher performance than alternative set-top box or consumer device-reliant approaches. BigBand’s MSP2000 also incorporates robust ad insertion capabilities that enable scalable and seamless splicing that supports flexible advertising models, which can produce significant non-subscription-based revenue growth for service providers.

“The BigBand MSP2000 platform launch is a milestone for the company, representing our 10 years of experience in video platform innovation to provide a clear and gradual path to personalised services and associated advertising,” said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, CEO of BigBand Networks. “We’ve built the platform over the last three years in close cooperation with our strategic customers from both cable and telco worldwide to address the changing paradigm from broadcast video services to a delivery model that is highly personalised. With the BigBand MSP our customers can reliably deliver differentiated, value-added services regardless of the types of access networks that they operate.”

The BigBand MSP2000 platform allows service providers to move, manage and monetise their content while providing visibility and control as video is delivered reliably across devices and networks. This new platform leverages BigBand’s decade of history in digital video networking to create a highly reliable and high-throughput method of delivering quality personalised applications. A wide range of new applications could be rapidly deployed on this unified carrier-grade platform including higher performance HDTV distribution, advanced advertising, enhanced subscriber quality-of-service tools, personalised messages and mosaics to yield dramatically improved consumer experiences.

BigBand’s MSP2000 benefits include:

•   Network-based solution for an improved and differentiated subscriber experience
•   High availability for reliable IPTV and personalised video delivery
•   Smooth migration path for ad revenue growth from traditional to emerging models
•   Simplified video management that streamlines network operations
•   Open standards implementation that protects investment
•   Flexible architecture for quick deployment of incremental services

BigBand, a TL 9000 certified company, is a pioneer in digital video networking and intelligent platforms with more than 10 years of experience deploying innovative carrier grade service offerings. The company’s solutions, a combination of network bandwidth management techniques and advanced media processing, are deployed by seven of the top 10 broadband service providers in U.S. and with more than 200 operators worldwide. BigBand has one of the largest footprints of carrier-class video processing platforms deployed worldwide, including supplying nearly 140,000 Edge QAMs in 2007. BigBand is the number one provider of switched digital video.

An innovator in advanced advertising solutions since 2002, BigBand implements over 700 million advertising transactions a year, in more than 60 programming networks. Its solutions are widely deployed by major operators including the leading U.S. cable interconnect, Los Angeles-based Adlink.
