SmoothWall Launches New Guardian Secure Web Gateway
InfoSec: Leeds-based web security specialists SmoothWall are today urging UK companies to ‘buy British’ with the launch of a new rack-mounted web filtering appliance. Capable of thwarting social ‘not’workers and evil trojans alike, the new Guardian Secure Web Gateway is a proudly British product, with plenty of power under the bonnet and a surprisingly affordable pricetag.
Although many people still associate the name SmoothWall with Open Source or firewalls, the recent success of their Guardian web filter (the first to use intelligent content analysis instead of a URL-blocklist based approach) has brought the company global recognition as a web security vendor.
With demand shifting rapidly to rack-based appliances, SmoothWall is now busy building hardware versions of their traditional software-based solutions. The Guardian Secure Web Gateway is the latest of four new hardware appliances to be launched since late 2007.
Product Manager Tom Newton says their solutions are now proving particularly popular in the UK, because they offer big savings over US-built alternatives:
“Most ‘big name’ security vendors are based in the US which means their solutions are priced in dollars. With a weak pound and diminishing IT budgets, UK-based companies are realising that they can get much better value for money by buying British-built technology from smaller but similarly competent UK-based vendors.”
SmoothWall will be showcasing the new Secure Web Gateway at Infosec next week (stand M40). Prices start at £2200 for 100 users.
