•   KDDI Expands Its Video-on-Demand Wholesaling Business
•   Delivering VOD Services to 17 of Japan’s Top Cable Operators
•   More Than 6,000 Movies and TV Programs Rolled into Service
•   Plan to Support the NHK on Demand Service in 2009

ACTON, Mass. & TOKYO (June 10, 2009) – Since launching its on-demand television wholesaling business using technology and services from SeaChange International (Nasdaq: SEAC) less than two years ago, Japanese telecommunications giant KDDI is now enabling 17 cable television operators across the country offer on-demand movies and television shows to their viewers.

The watershed service illustrates how large network operators can capitalize on their bandwidth and geographic reach to establish new revenue streams from video.  KDDI is currently offering more than 6,000 titles of high-quality regional and international on-demand content to Japan’s major cable operators throughout multiple regions.

KDDI, which was already providing VoIP-phone, backbone Internet and other IT services to more than 70 cable television operators throughout Japan, introduced its VOD wholesaling service in 2007.  SeaChange’s Axiom On Demand content delivery platform and MediaCluster® video servers are the foundation of the service, enabling KDDI to fully manage its cable partners’ uniquely branded on-demand services from central network operations centers.  The SeaChange platform automates content propagation across the network along with managing promotions and a range of business rules, eliminating the complexities of establishing and running an on-demand service.

In addition to providing the software and server technology, SeaChange’s Professional Services organization plays a leading role in deploying the on-demand platform to KDDI’s partners.

“KDDI’s work with SeaChange has brought to reality our vision for helping our cable partners to work around the barriers to on-demand television,” said Yuji Fujimoto, executive director of KDDI’s Cable Television Alliance Division.  “The KDDI on-demand service empowers these operators to concentrate on making available the most compelling mix of services and programming to their unique audiences, while we manage the technical and business requirements that ensure the content is delivered reliably and at the highest quality.”

“The service that SeaChange helped build with KDDI proves the opportunity for the on-demand wholesaling business model,” said Lincoln Owens, director of broadband for Asia Pacific, SeaChange.  “It also demonstrates the increasing breadth of service and solutions that SeaChange is providing to the world’s leading telco and cable operators.  From professional services and support to the most reliable and flexible software and server systems, SeaChange is leading the way in the delivery of personalized television around the globe.”

Television companies have been on-air with SeaChange solutions for nearly a decade in Japan.  The company is dedicated to supporting the special requirements for traditional television operations and applying its unique resources towards developing IPTV, on-demand and other emergent forms of television in the market.  SeaChange’s Japan sales and service team is based in Tokyo and leverages SeaChange support and product development facilities across Asia.

SeaChange will demonstrate its range of on-demand television and advertising solutions and services including middleware, subscriber applications and digital video systems during CommunicAsia (stand 4K3-05), June 16-19 in Singapore.  Click to download SeaChange’s whitepaper “A Technology Framework for Wholesale On-Demand TV.”
