26 October 2009 – Eindhoven – Liquavista B.V., a developer of breakthrough display manufacturing technology, announced today that it has received a strategic investment by Applied Ventures, LLC, the venture capital arm of Applied Materials, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMAT). The investment will enable Liquavista to further the commercialization of its unique display technology for future electronic products.
Liquavista has developed a new type of electronic screen technology for use in mobile phones, media players, electronic readers and other mobile devices. Liquavista’s displays create bright and colourful images that deliver excellent indoor and outdoor viewability and use dramatically less battery power. Users can engage with their favourite applications for longer before a recharge is necessary and battery sizes can be reduced, allowing devices to be thinner and lighter.
“This strategic investment from Applied Ventures marks a significant milestone for Liquavista,” stated Guy Demyunck, CEO of Liquavista and formerly CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics Division. “New display technologies are required to meet the need for daylight readability, low power and outstanding colour video performance in portable devices. Applied Materials has been among the first to understand the power of Liquavista’s technologies in delivering against those requirements and its significant potential for commercialisation and wide adoption.”
“We look for companies with cutting edge technology and whose strengths and capabilities complement our own,” said J. Christopher Moran, Vice President and General Manager of Applied Ventures. “We believe Liquavista’s approach, which is based on conventional, scalable display manufacturing processes, can spur the growth of new, high performance applications for the display industry.”
Liquavista’s technology offers a new type of paper-like display with vastly improved usability, content compatibility and cost comparisons. Aimed initially at the fast growing electronic reader market place, Liquavista’s first active-matrix technology platform, LiquavistaBright, offers a unique combination of outstanding brightness and high contrast in all lighting conditions, coupled to an intrinsic video capability, excellent legibility and functional freedom. LiquavistaBright will be shown for the first time at FPD International 2009 in Yokohama, Japan, on October 28-30.
