With global positioning systems in hand, 23 Rockwood students wandered around the school's athletic field in a scavenger hunt Thursday. But instead of looking for a hidden treasure chest, the students were testing skills they learned this week at a student institute sponsored by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. “The student institute helps teachers become comfortable with teaching GIS (geographic information system) technology and it increases students' interest in technology,� said Cassie Doty, education coordinator at the University of Maryland.
