As online shoppers become more savvy by using comparison websites, a new UK tutor directory is doing the same for the world of private lessons.
Launched earlier this year, The Tutor Pages (
www.thetutorpages.com) not only allows easy price comparison between tutors, but each tutor must also submit an article on their area of expertise, so that students can better judge who to hire. The benefits of being able to browse hundreds of professional articles and then contact tutors directly has already made the site a hit with students and parents.
The Tutor Pages lists tutors for academic subjects at all levels, from the early years to GCSEs, A-levels and beyond. It also covers an array of musical instruments and languages. Other topics range from business skills to reiki and advanced motoring.
Since its launch earlier this year, the service has been expanding rapidly, with over 200 new tutors signing up a month. Each week there are hundreds of enquiries from potential students across the UK.
Tutors apply to be accepted by the directory and then pay a small fee to upload their profile. Site administrators moderate the site, rejecting any tutors who do not meet the requirements.
The site has received positive comments from tutors, students, and also the communications department of The Royal College of Music. Timothy Anderson, one student who needed to learn classical organ, had tried other websites but without success. “The Tutor Pages provided me with a solution”, he commented. “I was able to read the tutor’s article about his recent concert tour, and so get some background information about him before getting in touch.”
