Contrast Into Printing
 by: Florie Lyn Masarate

A printing job’s purpose is to communicate a message. Most often than not, the messages are left ignored when it has no impact on people. Knowing the right impact to put into your prints will guarantee your message read and understood. One way to do this is to put some visual impact into your work. This can be a form of powerful words, eye-catching graphic design or a good layout.

A good way to create a noticeable design or layout is by means of using contrast. Contrast can be the size, color and format or the unexpected against the expected. Size contrast can be put in the graphics or the texts. The greater the difference, the more the impact it will have. An example of this a print having a headline in large letters will have a different impact if you make it the other way around, small headline and big text. Both can have their impact on the readers depending on the way it is presented. If you were presented with an advertisement using the brightest of colors with the words barely readable that you have to squint to read it, would you say it did not have an impact on you? You will remember it and even tell your friends about it.

Using colors to imply contrast will work better if it involves something unexpected or extreme. It does not necessarily follow that using colors like neon pink will get the attention more than any other color. A simple black and white or even a single color on your print can create an impact. Depending on how you go about designing them, any other colors can work for the desired impact.

Contrast in designs however can be by the way you present them. It can in the manner you fold your brochures. If the usual folding style is two-folds, why not make it three or more folds. The readers’ tendency upon seeing them would be surprise and finally interest. Putting some personal messages into them can also be done. People would get the feeling that you have gotten in all that trouble just to have that kind of card. Besides, they do not receive those kinds everyday. One of a kind, indeed. They would end up thinking that if you can go into all that in just your advertisements, why not in your services? This impact on them would make you a priority on their list of whom to call and get.

These are not only ways that you can make an impact. There is other countless way to do so. Now all you have to do is make one of your own and see the result.
