Design of web pages, websites and various web applications is known as web designing. Let’s take a tour back in time and see how the concept of web design came into being.

The seeds of internet technology were sown with the idea of sharing information on research and development in scientific and military fields in the US.

The work for converting this idea into reality, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) was set up in 1960s.

Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), X.25 and public access and Unix to Unix CoPy (UUCP) were some of the networks developed between 1960s to 1980s that bought the internet technology alive. These networks were then connected with the help of various Communication Protocols like the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP).

However during the same period i.e. 1969, Charles Goldfarb, Edward Mosher and Raymond Lorie produced the Generalized Markup Language (GML) which helped in managing text in large information systems.

American National Standards Institute committee published the Standard GML or SGML in 1980s. Standard GML or SGML was nothing but the working module of GML and was incorporated as the standard system by the government, researchers, universities and schools.

The first language of web designing was the mark up language which in due course of time became more complicated and was known as HTML (HyperText Markup Language). The first language for web designing was written by Tim Berners-Lee a scientist, working at CERN, the Nuclear Particle Physics Laboratory in Switzerland.

HTML was used in content that used table graphics, mathematical symbols etc. With the advent of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and server-side-scripting the web designing has come along way in terms of development.
